Best Ever Pageant
Keen bed race addicts agree: 2014 witnessed the best ever pageant through the Marketplace, down High Street and Bond End of the decorated beds, dressed runners and helpers, and spirited marching bands and dance groups. This is an aspect of Bed Race that has become the main feature of the day for many spectators, though most agree that it is the combination of madcap cross-dressing and wonderful designs with the gruelling athletic challenge of the race itself that creates the unique spectacle of the day.
The bed decorations get better and better. They have always been excellent but in recent years so many teams have clearly made so much effort that the organisers have chosen to recognise more teams. In addition to first, second and third place awards for the Best Dressed Bed trophy, this year rosettes were handed out to five other teams whose decorated beds merited a highly commended place in the record books.
Congratulations to First Scriven Scouts (team 65) whose helpers worked to win 'Best Dressed Bed' for the second year running. The design was based on the popular cartoon Despicable Me with spaceship and accompanying minions. Bed Race stalwart, Team Red Beer (85), came a close second with their imaginative and highly detailed take on Wacky Races. Third were The Young Ones (22) with the superb house from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, (who also finished the race in under 17 minutes).
Highly commended awards went to:
Seven Peas in a Pod, 19.
St John's Juggernauts, 31.
Welly Wheeners, 48.
Knaresborough Celtic Girls Under 16s, 68.
and Scrummie Mummies, 79.
Thanks to these and all teams for making 2014 Bed Race such an hilarious affair!
