BBC Look North Presenters Bow to Superior Speed of Bed Racers
BBC's Look North stars came to Knaresborough on 13 March to pit their racing sofa against the skills and speed of the beds of three Bed Race teams. The result was carried on the Look North broadcasts at lunchtime and in the evening of the same day. The background to the challenge was the 50th anniversary celebrations of Look North, where the presenters - Harry Gration, Amy Garcia and Paul Hudson - took their racing red sofa around 50 Yorkshire towns, covering 108 miles, on an 8-day tour of the county. Along the way, they raised funds for the Sports Relief charity. The tour started on 15 March but was kicked off in Knaresborough.
There was very little doubt about the outcome as Look North raced around Conyngham Hall field against three of the slick, mean Bed Race teams from Mums on the Run, Knaresborough Rugby Club and the Half Moon pub. Look North finished some way back - but at least their specially engineered sofa and the presenters completed the shortened course more or less intact.
"It proved what we have always believed," said Richard Hall of the Lions and chairman of the Bed Race organising committee. "When it comes to household items, beds beat sofas hands down and are demonstrably the fastest furniture on four wheels!"
Thanks to all who took part and to Harrogate Council for the use of the facilities at Conyngham.
