Road closure times for 2024 bed race
Residents and visitors to Knaresborough may have seen yellow signs around town and the surrounding area announcing road closures on bed race day on Saturday June 8th, but when are the roads closing, where can you park and how can you still get around?
No waiting cones will be put out on the evening of Friday 7th on parts of Waterside, Castle Ings and Cheapside. Please make every effort to move cars as these roads are on the race route so beds will need access.
Road closures start at 10am, with roads into/off the market place shutting to allow for set up. These include the top part of Castle Ings/Brewerton Street, Cheapside and Silver Street.
From midday, the High Street/A59 will close from the bus station with the closure running down Bond End and extending as far as up the hill to Harrogate Golf Club. High Bond End will close up to the junction with Lands Lane. This means that all roads in the centre of town will also be shut, so cars will not be able to move.
At 2pm, Waterside (from High Bridge to bottom of Castle Ings) and the remainder of Castle Ings will close for the race.
The aim is to lift road closures in stages, but please allow for the fact that roads could be closed until 6pm if it is deemed unsafe to open earlier due to crowds.
For those wanting to park, Knaresborough Lions have organised a park and ride service from GSPK on Manse Lane, with the bus run by Connexions. This will start around 9.30-10am, finishing at 6pm. Unfortunately, we are unable to have the park and ride service at King James retail park this year. King James School are also organising parking on their grounds for a £5 charity donation. Conyngham Hall car park, Henshaws car park and the Castle car park will be closed all Saturday 8th. Fisher Street and Chapel Street car parks will still be open.
An accessible viewing area will be available in the market place for those who require, outside the newsagents.
If you still need to get around, buses will be diverted to Harrogate via Briggate/Calcutt/Forest Moor. Trains will be running as normal. Boroughbridge Road can be accessed from the town centre via Stockwell Road while the High Street is closed.
